Block, the financial services company that owns the Cash app set up by Twitter founder Jack Dorsey, said Monday it learned that the former employee downloaded the information in December, according to a report filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
Cash App is notifying 8.2 million U.S
Although the former employee had access to the information during employment, the report says the information was downloaded after the employee was no longer with the company.
Cash App had a data breach
The data downloaded did not include usernames, passwords, Social Security numbers, or bank account information, but did include the full names and numbers of brokerage accounts, which are used to identify a user's inventory activity in Cash App Investing. Some information "including the value of the brokerage portfolio, brokerage portfolio holdings and/or stock trading activity for one trading day" was also compromised.
Cash App data breach affects US users
The filing says that the only users likely to be affected are those in the US who use Cash App Investing, which has about 8.2 million users. Block said it is reaching out to all current and former customers of the feature "to provide them with information about this incident and to share resources with them to answer their questions."
Block added that it has also notified law enforcement authorities of the breach.
